Ultrahigh-resolution optical coherence tomography.

In the past two decades, optical coherence tomography (OCT) has been established as an adjunct diagnostic technique for noninvasive, high-resolution, cross-sectional imaging in a variety of medical fields. The rapid development of ultrabroad bandwidth light sources has recently enabled a significant improvement in OCT imaging resolution, demonstrating the potential of OCT to accomplish its orig...

Ultrahigh resolution optical coherence tomography for the detection of early stage neoplastic pathologies

Identification of changes associated with early stage disease remains a critical objective of clinical detection and treatment. Effective screening and detection is important for improving outcome because advanced disease, such as metastatic cancer, can be difficult to impossible to cure. Many existing diagnostic modalities, including x-ray imaging, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, and e...

Ultrahigh-resolution optical coherence tomography with a diode-pumped broadband Cr(3+):LiCAF laser.

Ultrahigh resolution optical coherence tomography (OCT) is performed with a broadband, Kerr-lens mode-locked, diode-pumped Cr(3+):LiCAF laser. The laser source has a bandwidth of 89 nm with an output power of 37 mW. OCT imaging is demonstrated with 4.5 microm axial resolution in air or 3.4 microm in tissue. In vivo imaging of the human retina is demonstrated. Ultrahigh resolution OCT images fro...

In vivo human retinal imaging by ultrahigh-speed spectral domain optical coherence tomography.

An ultrahigh-speed spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) system is presented that achieves acquisition rates of 29,300 depth profiles/s. The sensitivity of SD-OCT and time domain OCT (TD-OCT) are experimentally compared, demonstrating a 21.7-dB improvement of SD-OCT over TD-OCT. In vivo images of the human retina are presented, demonstrating the ability to acquire high-quality s...

Noninvasive volumetric imaging and morphometry of the rodent retina with high-speed, ultrahigh-resolution optical coherence tomography.

PURPOSE To demonstrate high-speed, ultrahigh-resolution optical coherence tomography (OCT) for noninvasive, in vivo, three-dimensional imaging of the retina in rat and mouse models. METHODS A high-speed, ultrahigh-resolution OCT system using spectral, or Fourier domain, detection has been developed for small animal retinal imaging. Imaging is performed with a contact lens and postobjective sc...

Optical coherence tomography using a continuous-wave, high-power, Raman continuum light source.

High performance, short coherence length light sources with broad bandwidths and high output powers are critical for high-speed, ultrahigh resolution OCT imaging. We demonstrate a new, high performance light source for ultrahigh resolution OCT. Bandwidths of 140 nm at 1300 nm center wavelength with high output powers of 330 mW are generated by an all-fiber Raman light source based on a continuo...
